Gour Hari Das, a freedom fighter who works in Khadi Kraft and lives along with his wife & son, lives a content life in his neighborhood. However, one day when his son is unable to secure college admission for lack of a Freedom Fighter's Certificate, he feels the need to establish his identity. In the quest for this piece of paper to prove his authenticity to his son, his neighbors & to the world, he begins a journey that sucks up almost his entire life.

This is the journey of Sindhutai Sapkal, a poor village girl who grew up tending buffaloes while craving an education, but her unsympathetic mother had her married off to an older man when she was 12 years old. With strong suspicions that her husband is cheating on her, successful businesswoman Janvi (Udita Goswami) begins an affair with her co-worker Aryan (Tusshar Kapoor). But when Janvi decides that she's done fooling around, she learns her new lover has other ideas. Because Aryan doesn't want the relationship to end, he's willing to completely destroy the lives of Janvi and her husband to have his way.

While delivering food in a forest area in Andhra Pradesh, impoverished Narasimha is held against his will by a band of Naxalites led by Velu, and forced to join them. He is anxious to collect his dues and return home to his wife, Uma; daughter, Chinna; and son, Mohan, but Velu keeps on putting it off. Narasimha gets to know and sympathize with members of this band, and befriends Lakshmi, who was gang-raped by several policemen. He is then asked to prove his loyalty by killing an informant/plainclothes police inspector - which he does - and even accompanies the band on an assault on a school, resulting in the death of some children. Traumatized after this incident, he decides to flee - and it is this decision that will not only estrange him from his family but also force him to be on the run from the band as well as the police.

After decades of working in the printing industry in Kolkata in eastern India, Tarini has reached retirement age. He spends his days at home, having declined his son’s invitation to come to the United States. Then a friend shows him a help-wanted ad. Although he has never published a book, Tarini used to tell made-up stories to his friends in his youth, and the ad for a storyteller in Ahmedabad in western India piques his interest.
