Egor Polushkin (Stanislav Lyubshin) is a kind-hearted, nature loving, artistic family man who is living in a small village. To his neighbors and even his wife (Nina Ruslanova) he is a walking disaster, so they frown at him and call him Bedonosec (engl. misfortune bearer). Only Egors son (Viktor Anisimov) shares his enthusiasm for the beautiful things of live. As Egor becomes the new forest ranger, this new position brings him not only joy, but it is also the source of great suffering to come, as his fondness for the living nature and especially the newly acquired white swans is in conflict with the interests of others...

Moskow police detective Andrei Somov resigns and emigrates from Russia, but has to accept a menial job in a restaurant while his adolescent son and pregnant daughter-in-law are denied exit visa's. 'Andy' does however get to know some LAPD cops after volunteering his expertise and Russian language skills and is sent to Tijuana to fetch cheap tiles. On that Mexican journey Somov bumps into coyote Larry, another ethnic Russian but US citizen, who lost his daughter years ago and now helps illegal families enter the States. His present client, arrogant Russian Lena, haughtily presumes to know everything better but is always wrong, yet he takes pity on her daughter. Meanwhile the LAPD takes medium Michael March seriously about a mad bomber who targets pharmaceutical companies and got a bad feeling with and envelop held by Larry. It all ties in.

A Russian billionaire is brutally killed on the outskirts of Moscow. Vasily, a simple school teacher becomes an unwilling witness to this murder during his routine morning bike ride. The police, unable to find the criminals, begin to suspect Vasily and he quickly becomes the prime suspect. At the advice of his daughter, who also happens to be his attorney, Vasily allows himself to be placed in a psychiatric ward to avoid being incarcerated for the false accusation. It is believed that a fictitious diagnosis will help her father's case, but Irina doesn't realize that she has handed her father into the hands of a psychiatrist, Dr. Korzunov, who is conducting inhumane experiments that no medical professional would ever accept.
