The life and times of the Scandinavian artists' colony who lived in Skagen on the Danish coast during the 1890s. Not so much a biographical account, rather a portrait of a way of life. The painters became famous for the way they used the light in their work, and this has also been mirrored in the cinematography.

Young Felix is a trainee at a fire station, but he is afraid of heights and can not stand the sight of blood. His future as a fireman is doubtful and when he is suspended he steals an ambulance to prove his mettle.

Josefin is a six year old girl who lives isolated in the countryside, where her father is a priest. She has no friends until she meets Hugo. He is a carefree boy who rather walk in the forest than goes to school. Together with the gardener they make up fun things to do.

Based on August Strindberg’s autobiographical novel about his marriage to Siri von Essen. She was married when she met him, but abandoned her husband, became Strindberg’s mistress and later his wife.
