Los hijos de la noche

A neorealist tribute to the Italian resistance fighters of World War II.

Marianela is an orphan young girl living in a small village where she guides the blind young son of a rich country man. She is secretly in love with him, knowing that he loves her only because he can't see her ugly face. But one day a famous doctor appears and promises to operate him so he can see. His father is happy to know this way he will be able to marry his rich cousin. Nela gets desperate knowing his luck will turn into her disgrace when he finally sees her face.

Soledad is a young Spanish singer of the last century that everyone wants to conquer. But she only has eyes for one man, Pepe Velazquez, owner of the cafe where she sings. After several incidents caused by all kinds of jealousy and misunderstanding, Pepe embarks for America, leaving Soledad by Manolo, a young man of his town that has always been in love with her.

Pedro (played by a white actor in blackface), a son of a former slave, leaves Cuba (where he was being mistreated for being black) to seek his fortune in Paris. While working as a bellboy at a dance club, his dancing prowess is discovered and then he goes to become a famous dancer of the Charleston in the city. He falls in love with his dancing partner, who could not stand the thought of marrying him because of his skin color.
