Julie is an anglo-Indian girl with a loving, but alcoholic father and a domineering mother, a younger brother and sister. She falls in love with her best friend's brother Shashi Bhattacharya, a Hindu boy, and she has a passionate encounter with him, which leaves her pregnant. He goes away to college, not knowing about her condition. Her mother is distraught when Julie tells her about the pregnancy. They don't tell the rest of the family. Her mother thinks about getting Julie an abortion, but a devout Christian talks her out of it. Julie is sent away to have her baby in secret. The rest of the family is told that Julie got a job. When she comes back home, she runs into her Hindu boyfriend and tells him everything. He agrees to marry her, but his mother objects to the mixed marriage, not knowing about the baby born in secret. Julie's mother doesn't want the marriage either, as she and the rest of the family want to go to England

Kannum Karalum is a Malayalam language film starring Sathyan, Ambika Sukumaran, Sukumari, Kamal Haasan, and Vinodini. This was the first Malayalam film of Kamal Haasan - he played Sathyan's son. Vinodini was a child artist when she did this film and she did a dual role in this movie. The climax scenes of this film was shot on the top of the Sreenarayana Guru memorial at Varkala, Sivagiri. Avidathepole Ivideyum movie revolves around Anirudhan and Sugumaran who are roommates and are both pharmaceutical company executives. Sugumaran is urbane and somewhat westernized in attitude, Anirudhan is more of a son-of-the-soil type. During a trip to Anirudhan's village, Sugumaran falls in love with Sujatha who is Anirudhan's sister. Concurrently, Anirudhan takes a liking for Neelima, who is Sugumaran's sister. The two couples marry and then face the realities of marriage due to their different upbringing and lifestyles.

It bagged the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for Lakshmi, Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Adoor Bhasi who played Laxmi's alcoholic father, and the Filmfare Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. Storywriter Pamman received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story. It has the distinction of being the first Malayalam film to run continuously for 40 weeks in a Bangalore theatre. All Songs composed by well known music director G. Devarajan were instant hits.
