MCAINE. An Anagram of Cinema
An exploration of Sir Michael Caine's career from his early days in 1950s British theatre to gaining Hollywood fame for his contribution to cinema. The Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe winner has appeared in more than 150 films, worked alongside luminaries such as Shirley MacLaine and Laurence Olivier as well as with directors like Paolo Sorrentino and Christopher Nolan. The actor discusses his body of work, private life and the books he has written. German actress Katja Riemann and students from the Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media put some of Caine's acting techniques into practice. Portrait of the Italian sculptor Donatello (1386-1466), a precursor of the High Renaissance who considerably influenced sculptural art with his innovative way of conceiving space. Donatello is already a legend in his own lifetime. The sculptor is the forefather of the High Renaissance and pioneer for artists such as Raphael or Michelangelo. His bronze sculpture of the "David" or the "Pazzi Madonna" in marble are icons of art history and testify to his sculptural power of renewal.
‘Tangerine Dream is science fiction!’ declares band leader Edgar Froese who died in January, 2015 aged 70. For almost fifty years he and his band ‘Tangerine Dream’ explored sound and its effect on our emotions. This film about one of Germany’s first electronic bands kicks off with the young Berlin musicians who were as inspired by the space age of the 1960s, with its rocket launchings and visions of the future, as they were by their own heartbeat, on which Froese also based compositions. Aided by the Moog and other synthesisers Froese (and various band members) revolutionised popular music. His explorations took him into the worlds of classical, new and film music. He preferred to visualise moods rather than create clearly structured songs. A blend of amateur footage, interviews with band members, relatives, friends and colleagues such as Jean-Michel Jarre that creates a comprehensive portrait of an artistic pioneer.

The unique political and geographical status of West-Berlin in the cold war lead to a unique scene of artists reflecting the Zeitgeist and creating profound work that is now a part of history. A lot of historical footage is used and interesting anecdotes are shared. For example the story of creating the famous Die Dominas project involving Kraftwerk.
