Impure blood covers the period of 40 years of the 19th century and takes place at the crossroads of the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the penetration of the modern age. This transition was marked by the constant struggle of old and new, rich and poor, individuals and the society in which they live. Through the depiction of three generations, the series Impure Blood talks about the financial, moral and physical stumble of a family lineage.

In a Serbian village on the slopes of Stara Planina live 15 households. The youngest man in the village is 70 years old. The film gathers the intimate thoughts of the inhabitants of this village, whose wait for death is marked not by loneliness but by a common bond. The reduced nature of their daily life speaks not of poverty but of a spiritual wealth. Though without heirs or much of a future, they are not crushed by their solitude, but thankful for the life given to them. By observing their life, which is focused on the details of daily tasks, through deliberate movement and silent gestures, we discover people in harmony with the cycles of nature. In presenting their most intimate reflections on isolation, wilderness, life, love, this film is a testament of their preparations for their journey.

The film follows the story of Hadzi Trifun, a prominent Serbian merchant, who tries to keep the peace with the Turkish authorities, but also maintains his reputation and influence in Vranje, an important Turkish town near the border with liberated Serbia. While Trifun is preparing his two sons to succeed him as the leaders of the Serbian people, he is suffering not only from powerful Turkish beys, but also from his family. Trifun makes difficult decisions that will later affect his descendants, the heroes of the novel Impure Blood by Serbian writer Bora Stankovic.
