Skating Polly: Ugly Pop

Directed by Henry Mortensen, Ugly Pop delves into the lives of musicians Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, stepsisters from Oklahoma who create a new genre of music. The documentary chronicles the first decade of the band, as the chaos crescendos with brother Curtis Mayo joining on drums. An insightful, whimsical and sometimes magical look at what it takes to make it in the music industry on your own terms. “Sometimes the band T you want is only available in XL” sums up the experience of watching two tiny geniuses grow into one of today’s prominent and most exciting artists. This film is a documentary exploring the early years of Skating Polly. Peyton and Kelli get their first tastes of success, and try to stay true to themselves and their love of music. We see the sisters grow as people and musicians and how they became the band they are today. Their earnestness throughout is refreshing and inspiring.
