Slaves

When allied troops liberate a small battle-scarred Belgium town in 1944 the American and British commanders do all they can to help the war-weary people back on their feet. There are mental and physical wounds to heal, fields to plough, the church to rebuild. But a top Nazi, knowing the War is lost, has infiltrated the town and is fostering dissent and disunity.

Meet Nero Wolfe is a 1936 mystery film based on the 1934 novel Fer-de-Lance, written by Rex Stout. Set in New York, the story introduced the detective genius Nero Wolfe (Edward Arnold) and his assistant Archie Goodwin (Lionel Stander).

The issues the miners strike for include equity in wages with Anglo workers, and health and safety issues. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but at home he treats his wife, Esperanza Quintero, as a second class citizen. Esperanza, who is pregnant with their third child, is usually passive, but she changes her attitude when the men are forced to end their picketing by a Taft-Hartley Act injuction.

A convict marries the warder's daughter after his escape and she eventually persuades him to finish his sentence.
