Cantonese opera singer (Ma Sze-tsang) stretches beyond his limits to put his older son through college. When the opera troupe disbands, he works as a clown. Shamed, the son refuses his father support and secretly works to finance his education. A cultural history lesson as well, the story parallels the decline of Cantonese opera's popularity with economic and social misfortunes of the family.
Mysterious songstress Fang Biyu is loved by two brothers, Qiwei and Qijun. After freeing herself from the clutches of gangsters, she gives her heart to Qiwei. Tragedy comes knocking on the door when one of the gangsters comes out of prison, and Qiwei dies in a car accident. Blamed for her husband's death, Biyu is forced to go back to singing to make a living, but hopes to reunite with her son and return to the family one day.
The film features a conflict between a young wife and her mother-in-law, depicting the lives of ordinary people and their profound problems.
Seventeen-year-old girl Zhang Biyu is born to a well-off family but feels depressed. Biyu’s father is always busy off supporting the family’s economy. Biyu’s mother is addicted to playing mahjong. Both of Biyu’s parents don’t make time for her, Biyu’s brother is also too young, so Biyu has no one to talk to. At school, most of Biyu’s classmates have already have lovers, which makes Biyu feel lonely. Frustrated, Biyu starts having a crush on her teacher.
Jenny Wu is a singer who charms the well-to-do Peter Chen, but his parents object to a union between their only son and a lowly cabaret singer. He ignores their advice and marries her anyway, and for a time, they find some manner of wedded bliss. But the years are not entirely kind. He works hard to make ends meet, but his health pays the price.

A sensitive love triangle helmed by one of Shaw era's top directors, Chin Chien. A psychiatrist taking a room at an old friend's apartment soon discovers an insane woman living in a neighboring flat. As the doctor gradually heals the woman he also falls in love with her. The problem arises the friend's daughter confesses her love to him as well. Misunderstanding and mistaken passions soon lead to broken hearts and an emotional confrontation to the love triangle.
