Young, in Love

It tells a life story of Doel, the kampong kid, who is just idle in his village after graduated from a school in the city. Marriage arrangement set by his mother is always refused since he falls in love to Kristin, his friend in the city.

Adapted from Achdiat Karta Mihardja's novel of the same name. It follows a young Muslim man named Hasan who, through his interactions with others, loses his faith.

Unable to conceive, an Indonesian couple attempt artificial insemination but are given Japanese sperm. The result angers the father, who has a hard time accepting the baby as his own.

Miranti is left a widow after her pilot husband dies in an accident. She forces herself to work independently, despite feeling alienated. She soon learns that her brother-in-law Dimas cares greatly for her. Miranti ultimately realises that his feelings are more than just pity, and the two can unite.

It is a comic and tragic story, a film by Sjuman Djaya that is considered one of his classics. Mamad breaks his ethics and commits small-time cheating such as stealing office paper when he has to prepare for the expenses of his seventh child’s birth. This tortures him and he keeps trying to confess and explain to his boss about the problem, a boss who is realistic and would have understood, as he himself is not absolutely clean from corruption. A tragic comedy starts from this misunderstanding. Mamad who is haunted by guilt cannot find peace until he confesses, but the opportunity seems to always elude him, and finally he is even considered a disturbance by his boss. He is fired and takes his regret and sadness to the grave.
