Joel, his cynical best friend, Nick, and easy-going little brother, Jamie, are contemporary cavemen who live in the suburban south and simply want to be treated like ordinary thirty-something guys. Despite their attempts at assimilation, Nick doesn't believe mainstream society will ever completely accept them, Jamie seems to take it all in stride and Joel straddles the middle, torn between his friends, his more traditional values and his loving fiancée.

The initial limited screening of the pilot episode was met with a less than favorable reception. The pilot was accused of being racist as some critics thought the Cavemen were being used as a metaphor for African-Americans and other minorities.[14] The series subsequently underwent a major creative "retooling", which included changing the show's venue from Atlanta, Georgia to San Diego, California.[15][16] The pilot episode has remained unaired on ABC.

Based on the concept of "New America" in the year 2097, two decades after a nuclear apocalypse, Tex Kennedy, two robotic ex-secret service agents, and a female cannibal journey to find a famously dangerous area known as the "Threshold of Hell" to gain access to a radio tower to unite the survivors of the apocalypse.
