Production began in the fall of 2008 with 42 half-hour episodes of Sid the Science Kid having been ordered. The series debuted on PBS Kids on September 1, 2008, with a two-year on-air commitment. The original working title for the series was "What's the Big Idea?" and the central character, Sid, was originally named Josh. KOCE, the current primary PBS member for the Los Angeles area, began co-producing the show after KCET disaffiliated with PBS on December 31, 2010. 24-hour preschool channel PBS Kids Sprout acquired Sid the Science Kid on March 25, 2013. It airs daily at 3:30pm ET.

It derives its name from wubble, a type of unicycle mentioned in the Dr. Seuss book I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew.

CityKids is a television series that aired late Saturday Mornings on ABC from 1993 to 1994. These Muppets are composed of original characters designed specifically for the show, not ones taken from Sesame Street or The Muppet Show. These original characters often serve as the Greek chorus for the show, commenting on the situations of the human characters, but not actually interacting with them. Unlike most shows airing on ABC Saturday Mornings and produced by the Jim Henson Company at the time, CityKids was primarily targeted to a teenage audience, not to mention an urban one. Unfortunately, the show failed to generate desirable ratings from any demographic, especially the teenage one, and the show was cancelled by ABC after one season. The show's main theme song was composed by Malik Yoba & Raliegh J Neal II, both also composed other songs for the series and served as Musical Creative Supervisor for the show.
