Maxime works in a mine in Val d’Or. He shares his time with his girlfriend and his childhood friend, Julien, who was disabled after a car accident he caused two years earlier. Feeling guilty, Maxime wants to redeem himself. But he is held back by Mario, Julien's father who also works at the mine and who still holds it against him. One day, an explosion resounds underground. As part of the rescue mission, Maxime descends into the cave of the mine with the firm intention to save his colleagues.
To amuse themselves during the winter school break, the kids in a small village decide to have a massive snowball fight. Luke and Sophie, both 11 years old, become the leaders of the opposing sides. Sophie and her cohort defend an elaborate snow fort against the assault of Luke’s horde. Whichever side occupies the fort at the end of the winter break, wins. But what starts out as pure youthful fun and enthusiasm deteriorates into a more serious conflict. Joy is restored when all the children decide to attack the fort rather than each other and happily destroy every last bit of the snow fort.

It is the early 20th century. A stranger arrives in the small, rural community and disrupts the lives of its inhabitants. The man, who refuses to give his name, is dubbed The Outlander. A traveller who disdains conventional behaviour and parochialism, The Outlander disturbs the villagers' complacency and scandalizes the community; he also elicits admiration and gains a woman's love. He ultimately leaves in the same manner he had arrived, but not before he has helped the villagers open their eyes to the larger world beyond their village.
