The father of the family Matti Adler from Dortmund emigrates with his family to Mallorca after the fall of the Wall in the early 1990s. There he wants to realize his dream of opening a beer garden in Playa de Palma. Business is booming. But success comes at a price, prompting the family to cross more and more borders to stay on top.

Led to believe his abusive grandfather is responsible for his sister's recent death, Gabriel returns to his humble home in rural New Mexico. Yearning to protect his family, he swears to secretly kill his grandfather, yet at the critical moment, his plan is foiled and the two men are forced to spend the day together.
