Italy, 1990. On the night when Italy's national football team is eliminated from the World Cup by Argentina on penalty kicks, a well-known film producer is found dead in the Tiber River. The main suspects for the murder are three young aspiring screenwriters, hauled in front of the Carabinieri to tell their version of what happened.
Beatrice is a blabbermouth and a so-called billionaire countess who likes to believe she’s in intimacy with world leaders. Donatella is a young quiet tattooed woman, locked in her own mystery. They are both patients of a mental institution and subject to custodial measures.
After finish his work Marchino finds the body of a teenager girl and goes to BarLume to call the police who don't believe him after his infamous past. Massimo goes to check and here starts a new story of BarLume.
The film tells the story of the Michelucci family, from the nineteen-seventies to the present day: the central character is the stunningly beautiful Anna, the lively, frivolous and sometimes embarrassing mother of Bruno and Valeria. Everything begins in the Summer of 1971, at the annual Summer beauty pageant held at Livorno’s most popular bathing establishment. Anna is unexpectedly crowned “Most Beautiful Mother”, unwittingly stirring the violent jealousy of her husband. From then on, chaos strikes the family and for Anna, Bruno and his sister Valeria, it is the start of an adventure that will only end thirty years later. Bruno ends up living in Milan after managing to escape from Livorno and his mother. He will return to his hometown at the end of the film to be at his mother’s side during her very last days.

Mario, ristoratore fallito che, dopo aver tentato inutilmente il suicidio, (prendendo del sonnifero e utilizzando i gas di scarico dell'auto, che però rimane senza benzina mentre lui stava dormendo) si sveglia e per un'omonimia, viene accolto alla stazione ferroviaria da una famiglia di allevatori di struzzi, che invece sta aspettando l'arrivo di un assessore regionale (anche lui si chiamava Mario) che dovrebbe garantire dei sussidi alla loro traballante attività. Il protagonista, sempre più spaesato, si ritrova circondato dalla premurosa attenzione dei suoi ospiti, fino al chiarimento finale, che genera uno sbigottimento superato da un superbo pranzo di Natale, in cui Mario dimostra la sua bravura di cuoco.
Bruno and Mirella get married in 1989 and live in the little town of Piombino seems to be a bed of roses. After a while Bruno gets the sack, while Brunella takes up with a local tv idol, Gerry Fumo. When she realizes that Bruno can't stand being on the dole, she repents and wants to leave Gerry. It is too late: Bruno has found out everything and asks her to leave. After a while they take up another time, but they soon realize that their love story has ended. Mirella goes back to her parents' house and begins to work in a kindergarten, while Bruno finds a job at the local beach. The two begin to exchange a tender correspondence.
