Ma the flying bandit calls it quits after his daughter is born. His wife, a onetime prostitute, can’t stand poverty and turns him in to the authorities before resuming her profession. An epic production directed by Li Pingqian in collaboration with eight directors from Mingxing Film Company. Butterfly Wu stars as a hostess who, after leaving Shanghai for ten years, invites her secondary schoolmates for a reunion. They each reminisce about their lives with some having difficulties in marriage or career. Some led destructive lives while others contributed to the country. The film espouses the virtue of Wu who rescued an anti-warlord revolutionary, inferring that women are deemed exemplary if their deeds benefit the country. As one of China's earlier sound movies, the film's vivid images are complemented by a deliberate use of sounds and songs exemplified by the clever juxtaposition of narration and image in two segments.

You, of course, don't get to hear the song, but it catches people's attention. Once they meet and work together, they fall in love. Is it forever?
Qi can't stand the family she's been married into tries to escape. On the day that she escapes, her sister-in-law is killed by her nephew. Qi becomes a suspect and is arrested. After being released from prison, Qi decides to take revenge on society. She makes a living betraying her lust and hangs out in various places with unconventional people. She meets Zou Wenlan, and the two fall in love and plan to start a new life together. However, the Zou family strongly opposes the marriage, and the two are separated. Qi jumps into the sea and commits suicide. Facing Qi's tombstone, Zou Wenlan and and his family are full of sorrow and repentance.
