Serra, his sergeant Rizzo, and his lieutenant Fiori take a last walk toward home. It's said that each soldier gets three miracles; when Serra's are used up, what then?
After the 8th September 1943 north of Italy is occupied by Germans. Italian army collapsed and the soldiers are escaped to the mountains trying to set up a resistance. Many civilians did the same and Johnny, an English literature student, is among them. Johnny avoids to band together the red partisans (communists) and tries to be part of the azure bands (former regular soldiers). But in both cases he is deluded by the partisan bands and discovers that the partisan war is less poetic and genuine that he thought. At one point anyway the partisans free Alba from Germans. When the city falls again in German hands Johnny escape with Ettore and Pierre. But, one after another, German army and Italian fascists captures the partisans and Johnny will pass the winter alone and isolated. He then finds the way to participate to one of the last attack to occupants, in fact the war will be over two months later.
Palermo, Sicily, 1984. Many tribal people, including the Gypsies, have a form of marriage ceremony where the bride is ritually kidnapped from her home. Pietro De Leo (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), a store security guard, spends his days catching shoplifters, his weekends visiting his children who are in the custody of his ex-wife, and his evenings thinking about how to flirt some more with the store's makeup consultant. One day, he sees a young Gypsy girl (Maria Bako) lift something from his store, but is so taken with her that he lets it slide. He even testifies on her behalf when she comes to court for a hearing on another matter. Indeed, he is so taken with her that he wants to marry her, gypsy-style. He has a great deal of difficulty bringing off the kidnapping, but finally accomplishes this and the subsequent wedding. He moves to the south of Italy and starts a new life with her as a truck driver while she gets legit jobs as a hotel maid and at a factory.
Greek Sea, World War II. An Italian ship leaves a handful of soldiers in a little island; their mission is to spot enemy ships and to hold the island in case of attack. The village of the island seems abandoned and there isn't a single enemy in sight, so the soldiers begin to relax a little. Things change when their ship is hit and destroyed by the enemy, and the soldiers find themselves abandoned there.
