Based on the novel by Bhisham Sahni, Tamas is an epic drama set against the backdrop of riot-stricken North India on the eve of Partition in 1947. Nathu, an outcast, is hired to kill a pig, whose carcass he’s later appalled to find in front of the mosque. A riot follows and, ridden with guilt, Nathu takes his ailing mother and pregnant wife and leaves town.

The film mainly is about a tawaif (courtesan or some one who willingly or otherwise adopts the profession of entertaining others for a living), who accidentally enters the life of Dawood (Rishi Kapoor) who already has fallen in love with an upcoming writer (Poonam Dhillon). Bashir is arrested and taken to Court, where Justice Diwan finds him guilty and orders that he be hanged. Then a man named Bhurre gets killed, and the evidence points to Rajan, who is also arrested and produced before Justice Diwan, who also finds him guilty, and sentences him to death. Rahim then finds that his house had been burned down and is out on the street. Then the unexpected happens, Sharda is killed, and Diwan finds out that Rahim had been seen outside his house. Will Rahim be the next accused to be sentenced to death by Diwan?
Advocate Jayant (Rajesh Khanna) a criminal lawyer believes that a lawyer's duty is to do service to his client alone and to bail him out of his trouble even if his client is in reality a criminal. His close friend Amit is an honest police inspector who brings many of the goons that are part of gang of smugglers led by Mulchand Malhotra but they are let off by the court when he uses his skills and knowledge about the loopholes in law. Jayant helps Mulchand in setting his workmen free from jail. Amit Gupta asks Jayant to be more responsible when he defends criminals, who are repeat offenders. Later Amit is killed and this motivates Amit's brother Vijay to join the police force.
Advocate Gautam Mehra lives in Bombay with his wife, Anju, and a daughter, Rakhsa. One day while returning from court he sees a woman being molested. He stops, phones the police, and then tries to stop the molester, in vain, though as he gets attacked and loses consciousness. But the police do arrive and arrest the molester. It is after this robbery that the past will be re-visited and it is then a number of people, on whom Ranjit has depended upon, will come to know of his real background, including the murder he committed before he started his career as a criminal.

Ramdev Bakshi is the only son of widower and former Indian Army General Durgaprasad, who has been decorated several times with various medals for bravery shown in the line of duty. A woman blames a nightclub drummer for the suspicious death of her sister, and seeks revenge. However, the pair work together to solve the mystery and become romantically involved, after he introduces himself under another name.
Sunder Khanna is an orphan and lives a poor lifestyle in India. He is friendly with wealthy Gopal Verma, the only child of Judge Verma; and a wealthy girl named Radha, who is the daughter of an army Captain. The trio grow up, and Sunder falls head-over-heels in love with Radha, but she as well as her parents reject him.

About to inform his parents, Purchan does not know that Dinanath has actually instructed Lali not to see him anymore as he is a Harijan (Lower-Caste).
Raj Kumar is a wealthy businessman and dislikes everything ugly. When his wife, Kamla, becomes pregnant and gives birth to an ugly son, he asks the attending Dr. Mathur to inform his wife that their child was still-born. Dr. Mathur places the child in the hands of Rahmat and his wife, Naseeban, who welcome him with open arms. But misfortune follows them, as the child, who is named Pyare, accidentally burns their dwelling down, killing Naseeban. Rahmat then re-locates to his village when he teaches Pyare the skills required to play musical instruments and sing. Years later, Rahmat passes away, and informs Pyare that he is really a Hindu. Dr. Mathur fills the rest of the blanks for Pyare, and arranges a song and dance play and hopes that Raj will overcome his dislike for his now-grown son.
