Rich Spanish landowner Alvaro is torn between his wife Elvira and two other women in his life. He's also worried about the fact that both his father and grandfather were murdered by Spanish revolutionaries in the house he's inherited.

Sergio falls in love with Federica, the maid of the house whom everyone calls "Volvoreta" ("butterfly" in Galician). Aware of the situation, the mother of the young gentleman dismisses the maid, who has no choice but to go to the capital city. But Sergio's love is so strong that he will follow her wherever she goes.

An old and seriously ill man, who lives with his son, meets an older woman, who is suffering the same cirumstances like he, and soon starts to fell better and becoming sane.
