Morino Hotaru is a second year high school student who has had an unrequited crush on Otaka Ren since junior high school. One day, while on a school trip with Ren and her good friend Yamamoto Shiori, their bus gets into an accident. When Hotaru wakes up, a young man who is dressed fully in black appears in front of her. He is Kuro, a grim reaper.

The story is set in 2018, 25 years after the original manga's "Video Girl Ai" arc ("Video Girl Len" arc was set seven years after the first arc). Sho Moteuchi (Shuhei Nomura) is a high school student. After his parents divorced, he begins to live with his uncle. At school, he develops feelings for his classmate Nanami, but Nanami likes his friend Tomoaki. One day, he finds an old broken video cassette recorder at his uncle’s house. Sho repairs the video cassette recorder and suddenly a video of girl plays. The girl in the video introduces herself as Video Girl Ai. The girl then steps out of the video and lives with Sho for the next 3 months.

Moved by a performance by Fukui Chuo High School's JETS cheerleading team which she saw as a child, Fujitani Wakaba came to idolize Tomonaga Hikari and dreamed of joining the same team in the future. And, on the day of her birthday, she hears someone playing the violin from the attic. When she tracks down the sound, she finds Itsuki Seno playing it. From this moment onwards, Itsuki begins to observe the Saijo family’s true status and discovers the hidden sides of the family. For example, her 15 years old son is being bullied. And her 17 years old daughter is experiencing trouble with her boyfriend. Also, her promising husband who is working for the stock company is really a good father? And, why did her mother-in-law ask them to live together? Finally, her best friend also has a big secret!? Furthermore, she is under a huge strain of emotional pressure. And her feelings towards Itsuki starts to shake? What is the reason behind Itsuki living in the attic? And how will Kinuka deal with a family on the verge of utter chaos.

I (Takumi Kitamura) am a high school student. I happen to find a diary by my classmate Sakura Yamauchi (Minami Hamabe) that reveals she is suffering from a pancreatic disease. I spent time with Sakura, but she dies. 12 years later, due to Sakura’s words, I (Shun Oguri) am now a high school teacher at the same school where I graduated from.
