The story takes place over a 24 hour period. In the southernmost part of Japan, 20 fishing boats of an unknown nationality suddenly fire upon and occupy parts of the Hateruma archipelago. Members of the Japan Coast Guard are detained. Under the extremely tense situation, the Japanese government sends Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and an escort fleet to the area. Ryota Akitsu (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is the captain of the Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and Toshiya Niinami (Kuranosuke Sasaki) is second-in-command. It is now 6:23 am. and Japan faces one day which they never have before.

Among a numerous enhancements, for the film's 2.0 release, were a number of scenes were overhauled with 3D animation, visual improvements, and soundtrack rerecorded in 6.1 surround sound.
Ayumu Aizawa who can't recall his childhood. He doesn't suffer from amnesia but his younger days are a mystery to him. When asked to spend the summer with his father in Tana, a rural town two hours away from his home in Tokyo, Ayumu refuses as he has not seen his divorced father in four years. He gets bribed by his mother with a mountain bicycle and reluctantly agrees. Unbeknownst to him, this fateful trip will put together bits of his past. Soon after arriving at Tana, Ayumu encounters strange happenings such as meeting a mysterious boy called Wakkun, who lives in an enchanted forest, and floating orbs of lights appearing in the sky.
In the last volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Junichiro Tokuoka, Mai Minase, Yuki Aihara, Kyoko Tohno, and Sato Ichiro breaks into the computer facility and use the computer with the equipments for the online game “The World” to try and revive Tomonari Kasumi. While they do this, they also must watch for the guards who are coming to stop them. Tokuoka and Mai begins the process and Kyoko, Yuki and Sato Ichiro buys time to distract the guards. Can Tokuoka, the three girls and Sato Ichiro be able to complete their mission before time runs out for Tomonari Kasumi?
In the second volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Yuki Aihara was a school girl who one day went to a school theater and while watching a movie, the words "The World" suddenly appeared on the big screen and suddenly, the entire town of Yokohama was blacked out due to power shutting off. People are desparately trying to escape and Yuki tries to get out as well. Suddenly, a mysterious woman who claims that she happens to work at the school theater helps Yuki find the way out of the theater. Can Yuki escape from the black out crisis and join up with Junichiro Tokuoka to get the answers about "The World"?
.hack//Liminality is an OVA series directly related to the .hack video game series for the PlayStation 2, with the perspective of Liminality focused on the real world as opposed to the games' MMORPG The World. Liminality was separated into four volumes; each volume was released with its corresponding game. The initial episode is 45 minutes long, while subsequent episodes are 30 minutes long. The video series was directed by Koichi Mashimo, written by Kazunori Itō with music by Yuki Kajiura. Primary Animation production was handled by Mashimo's studio Bee Train which collaborated for the four games as well as handled major production on .hack//Sign.

Can Mai and Tokuoka find out clues about "The World" and wake Tomonari Kasumi up out of his coma?
In the third volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Junichiro Tokuoka travels to Tokyo, Japan to talk with a girl named Kyoko Tohno about the mysteries of "The World", an online computer game that put some people in a comatose state. At the same time, Kyoko has received a strange cell phone e-mail from Helba. They continue to discuss and are trying to get clues about everything related to "The World". They later meet a mysterious man named Sato Ichiro and speak with him to get answers. Will Tokuoka and the three girls Mai, Yuki, and Kyoko that he cooperates with be able to find the mysteries and clues of "The World" and save the comatose victims?
As one of Suzuki's last fims, it is related to his 1967 Branded to Kill, either as a remake or sequel. The plots of both films involve a third-ranked hit man deposing the top-ranked hit man to claim the top rank.
