Ramu (Nandamuri Balakrishna) is an orphan whom Lawyer Raghava Rao (Jaggayya) and Gayatri Devi (Sharada) had adopted and treated like a son, as one of their four children. Ramu was very sensible and loved his parents a lot, he could do anything for his parents. Once Ramu meets Sita (Rajani), who is the daughter of the servant in their house and falls in love with her. Ramu's freedom and rights in the affairs of their house is not liked by their own sons Satish and Ramesh (Hari Prasad and Bhaskar) and son-in-law Gopalam (Sudhakar). So they plan and remove Ramu from their house and take all the authorities. Now Ramu is trying to reunite his family. Whether he will he be successful in his mission forms the rest of the story.

Besides, Suraiah (Satyanarayana) a deleterious and always begrudges Chandraiah. Yet, benevolent Chandraiah knitted his elder daughter Satya with Prasad. Once Radha (Vanisri) a famous stage artist & singer comes to his village on break. There, she becomes interested towards Gopi by listening to his flute & music. They spend time together and Radha gradually becomes fascinated by him. Before she starts back, Gopi finally proposes to her and she gladly accepts.

The film was a remake of Tamil film Nenjil Or Aalayam (1962), Sridhar remade the film in Hindi as Dil Ek Mandir (1963). It was also remade in Malayalam as Hridayam Oru Kshethram (1976), and in Kannada as Kumkuma Rakshe (1977).

Dr. Murali Krishna (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) loves Anuradha (Savitri) in college but keeps to himself. Anuradha becomes the victim of her classmate Sarala's (Rajasree) jealousy and trickery and complains about Murali to Principal. The event results in hatred between them and Murali losing scholarship. Murali gets help from his uncle Lingaiah(Ramana Reddy) and goes to London for higher studies. Lingaiah in return plans to give his daughter Lakshmi(Girija) to Murali upon his return. Lingaiah appoints Anuradha as caretaker of innocent Lakshmi. Anuradha comes to know about their plan and sacrifices her love for her cousin Lakshmi. Lakshmi has different plans; She is in love with her cousin Yoganandam (Relangi) and not interested in Murali. She asks Anuradha to write replies to Murali's letters on her behalf. Anuradha goes through a lot of struggle in the process.

Bhaskar (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) and Vasanti (B. Saroja Devi) are college mates who clash when she complains to the college principal about a love letter he sent her. Later on realizing her mistake, Vasanti apologizes to him and the two fall in love. Vasanti's elder sister, Geeta (Krishna Kumari), supports the family by stitching clothes.Bhaskar rents the room upstairs in their house. He falls ill and in nursing him, Geeta falls in love with him. She confides her love to Vasanti, who decides to sacrifice her love for her the sake of her sister and convinces Bhaskar to marry Geeta. Bhaskar initially neglects Geeta. On finding out, Vasanti writes to him that their sacrifice, made for Geeta's happiness, would mean nothing unless he is a good husband to Geeta. Bhaskar relents and Geeta and he have a son. Vasanti joins them and Geeta suspects that there is something on between Bhaskar and Vasanti and makes Vasanti leave the house.
