Amit feels it to be his obligation to leave the girl he loves and marry his brother's pregnant fiancée instead. But when, by an unexpected turn, Amit and the now also married Chandni meet again, their love for each other proves to be stronger than their marital vows.
Amma (Smita Patil) is a woman who has been raped and then forced to flee her home with her husband and child after her husband kills the rapist. Her life plunges even lower in the overwhelming and crowded city when her husband, in turn, is killed by smugglers. Left alone to fend for herself and her little boy, she desperately tries to instill moral values in her son in spite of the immorality of life all around them. She is indirectly aided in this effort by a dubious hero-type, but there does not seem to be much hope for her future and that of her son.
Harnek Singh alias Nek(Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a honest farm worker from village, who works hard for his employer, Jagirdar Joginder Singh(Amrish Puri). Nek is in love with village belle, Kammo(Rama Vij), and hopes to marry her after he accumulates enough wealth and some land. One day the Jagirdar asks his assistant, Tulsi(Om Puri), to send Nek out of village for about 20-25 days. When Nek returns home, Joginder is pleased with him and allocates 6 acres of land so that he can be independent, and marry Kammo.
DSP Shiv Kumar(Sunil Dutt) returns home to his wife Sheetal(Raakhee Gulzar) and their young daughter and announces that he has been transferred to Bombay. Shiv Kumar has two brothers, Vijay(Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi(Shashi Kapoor), who live in Mumbai. They are intelligent and capable guys, but spend their time loafing about the city and swindling unsuspecting people. After resuming his work at Mumbai, however, a mystery man(Shatrughan Sinha) tries to assassinate Shiv Kumar. Shiv Kumar survives both the times.
Sixteen-year-old Mehna falls in love with a doctor from the city who plans on taking advantage of her. When he leaves her after she refuses his advances, Mehna's cousin steps in to care for her.
A veterinarian, Dr. Rao, makes a visit to a village, where he intends to commence a co-operative society dairy for the betterment of the rural people. The film is set against the backdrop of the White Revolution of India (Operation Flood) which started in 1970. It was entirely crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers who donated Rs. 2 each.
Shyam and Soni live with their mother in a village. They are very poor. The children give away the only bread piece to a hungry saint, who in turn gives them a magical conch. The children somehow discover that the conch reveals something foul concerning the listener. While patrolling, the disguised king reaches the kids and the children give the conch to him, requesting to pass it to the king, saying that this is magical. The king, using the conch, finds that his cousin wants to poison him. The king reaches his palace and confirms the plot against him and punishes the culprits. The king sends jewelery, garments, sweets, fruits etc for the kids and punishes the moneylender, and comes to take them along. The message "Good deeds do not go unrewarded".
