Laura, a young noblewoman who grew up in a convent, is given in marriage to the baron of Carini, an overbearing and lustful man. The life of the young baroness seems destined for unhappiness until she meets Luca Corbara, who arrives in the country to find his origins.
Angela, an Italian-American woman, after many years returned to Sicily to attend the funeral of her father. During the ferry trip she meets Salvo, a teenager boy who claims to be hunted by the Mafia, because of a quantity of drugs he stole to some criminals. She decides to give him a ride and the two embark on a journey through Sicily. His amorous attentions are soon obvious, and leads to a fairly obvious ending.
In 1925, Desmond Jordan, an American archaeologist, tries to find the mysterious Speaking Mountain that is supposed to be in the middle of the Sahara desert, where he meets a bunch of deserters from the French Foreign Legion, who are pursued by the ruthless Lieutenant Ryker.
Sicily 1812: the first liberal constitution shall put an end to the privileges of the feudal lords. Luca Corbara, sent by the Minister of Finance to control the landed properties, begins to suspect that the current Carini feud is made up of lands usurped more than two centuries before by the lover of the killed Baroness.
