In 1868, after the fall of the Shogun-dominated Japan, the new government orders people from Awaji, near Kobe, to re-locate to the northern part of Hokkaido. These people once supported the now displaced Samurais of the older days. After two years, over 500 of them settled in their new land under the leadership of Hideaki, husband of Shino. However, as crops fail he is to go to Sapporo to learn new techniques of farming, leaving his wife and daughter for 5 years. All this time, the new community is constantly watched by the government which choose to again uproot them from their new homes.

Troubled by his family’s interest in money making and social status, he leaves home after graduating high school to join a Buddhist sect in Tokyo. After falling out with a friend, and receiving news about his sister re-emerging pneumonia, he decides to return home where starts his own experimental school, teaching new farming methods to young local farmers while also instructing them in music and arts. It was only after his death, through the help of his brother Seiroku, that his writings became widely read.

Tomomi and Hiroshi are on their honeymoon. During the seaside drive, she happens to see a girl being sexually assaulted. This sparks old memories of a rape which had deflowered her when she was much younger. Then, by coincidence, shortly after the couple arrives in the resort town, Tomomi spots the man who had raped her. He’s now working as a hotel bartender. Even though she immediately remembered him, the man obviously does not recognize her. Tomomi takes advantage of his ignorance to scheme a revenge plot against him. While her husband is off sightseeing, she convinces the bartender to accompany her into the mountains “for some private sex games” where she leaves him to freeze to death.

Two female friends and their very different lives… One witnesses the brutal rape of her sister while the other has to deal with a troubled relationship with an African-American soldier. Together, the girls will be drawn into a spiral of revenge and violence.
