Herbert, a young man who has just turned 17, faces the task given to him by his literature teacher: the writing of a play. This will cause a collision between what the family expects of him and how he really wants to face his life.

A biological mother, Sara, and a foster mother, Virginia, share a girl. Sara lost custody due to problems with alcohol and drugs. Five years later, the girl is returned to her.

At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the nun Maria is forced to flee her convent. She takes refuge in a brothel, until it is liberated by a woman's anarchist group. Maria joins the group and eventually goes to the front.
