After losing his farm during the floods of 1953, a romantic Dutch farmer is tired of getting his socks wet. He cycles to Italy and decides to grow tulips in the sweltering heat of Puglia.
A former war photographer tries to ward off his personal ghosts by taking pictures of trees only. He lives alone among olive trees in southern Italy. One day he decides to cross the sea. Once in Albania, he goes near the location where he had made his last war picture, as if he was retracing his steps. He finds a tree he wants to photograph. He is just about to do so, when he discovers a runaway girl hiding in it with the sole objective of crossing the sea and getting to the other side. The man has no choice. He has to flee with her, follow her and guide her along until a storm separates them.
On the day she learns of her pregnancy, a woman also finds out that her husband is sterile.

The story takes place in an unspecified town in Puglia. We are in the seventies. The arrival of three beautiful and uninhibited girls from the north, the daughters of an engineer who has moved to run a factory, brings the turmoil among the young people of the country. Stories of love, betrayals, state money (stolen) and missed promises intertwine. All looked at from the eyes of Carlo (alter ego of the director Sergio Rubini), the smallest of all. The film marks the debut of Vittoria Puccini at her first experience as an actress.
