Two minor characters from the play "Hamlet" stumble around unaware of their scripted lives and unable to deviate from them.
It is 1918, the evening of The Great War. Austro-Hungarian empire is collapsing, and all around Croatia there are outlaw deserters, fighting in forests. A city journalist decides to become a country schoolteacher, just to find some peace in that restless political situation. But, neither the village is safe from the militaristic policy of the imperial goverment.
A student of architecture from Zagreb believes that the new model of city can meet the need of its citizens. However, his professors, the corrupt business environment and even the parents of his fiancée stand on his way.
A group of village boys found a comradeship under the leadership of the most intelligent amongst them - Pero Krvžica. They decide to renovate the old and abandoned watermill on the outskirts of the village. A discord amongst the villages cause the mill to thenceforth remain unused. The owner of the steam mill benefits most from this situation. To make sure it stays closed, the corrupted steam mill owner is ready to bribe customers. Pero's comradeship does not want to give in under the pressure of corrupt villagers...
