Chae-sun then disguises herself as a man and enters the Dongrijungsa to learn pansori, but Shin Jae-hyo doesn't accept her as his student. One day, he hears Daewongun, the most powerful man in Joseon and the father of the King, is going to hold a national competition of pansori performers known as “Naksungyeon.” Shin Jae-hyo decides to teach Chae-sun who has a true voice to perform “Chunhyangga.” If anyone finds out that Chae-sun is a woman, Shin Jae-hyo and Chae-sun will both face death.

But her fame also attracted the attention of foreign invaders, and during the Japanese invasion in 1592, she was among the Korean artisans captured and forcibly taken to Japan and made to continue their craft there. Under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's orders to enrich Japanese arts and culture, Baek helped the advancement of many new types of pottery that would be claimed as Japanese works of art. She became well-respected in Japan, and there exists a shrine in the city of Arita dedicated to her.

One of the ghosts watching over Shi-ohn is her ex-boyfriend Lee Hyung-joon, another detective who died that night six years ago when Shi-ohn received the serious head injury that nearly killed her and left her comatose. They were working on a big case together, but Shi-ohn has no memory of what happened that fateful night.

He joins the military in order to put her through medical school and becomes a brilliant officer, leading his men to victory through guerilla warfare. Mistakenly believing that Jang Woo was killed in battle, Soo Yeon becomes engaged to military officer Tae Ho. Jang Woo returns on the eve of their wedding, and the two are briefly, painfully united, but the eruption of war tears them apart once again, forcing him to fight alongside Tae Ho on top of everything. Jang Woo keeps fighting to get back to his love, but the war continues to find new ways to keep them apart. Leading drama stars So Ji Sub and Kim Ha Neul portray star-crossed lovers who are torn apart by war.
