The film takes place in the 18th century Austria and revolves around Prince Christian, commonly known as General Crack. The film is based on the semi-hit stage musical of the same name by Oscar Hammerstein II and Otto Harbach. Beery's extraordinarily deep bass voice registers particularly well in the songs.

Lugosi, in his first talkie, played the owner of a Vienna nightclub.
