Kindly Dr. Gupta (Ashok Kumar) is preparing to retire, and hopes to marry his daughter Jyoti (Zarina Wahab) to his associate Dr. Anand (Parikshit Sahani). Anand does not have time to romance, or assist Dr. Gupta on his large egg farm, so he hires a college friend as property manager, Mukesh (Vijayendra). Jyoti is entranced by Mukesh, and against her fathers wishes decides to marry him. Mukesh has his eyes set on the good life, but unknown to Jyoti he is already married to Geeta (Sarika), whom he abandoned with a child when he found out she was Anpadh (illiterate). Dr. Gupta has an accident one night, injuring a woman named Geeta and brings her home to recuperate. He teaches her how to mingle with high society, dress and eat properly, and ensures the education of her son. In return for his decency and compassion, Jyoti prepares to marry Dr. Gupta. When her father arrives for the festivities, he recognizes Mukesh.
Indrani (Indu) Sinha (Raakhee) is the eldest child in the Sinha household, consisting of her elderly and ill father, Chandranath (A.K. Hangal); two younger sisters and a younger brother. She loves Dr. Sagar Varma (Parikshat Sahni), who looks after her ailing dad, and hopes to marry her soon. His mother approves of Indu, but would like her to leave everthing behind, and look after her son and the household, which is not acceptable to Indu. Misfortune visits the Sinha household and Chandranath passes away, leaving the entire responsiblity of the household on Indu's shoulders. She decides to open a school for children, and her siblings help her. She refuses Sagar's offer of living at his house. Sagar and Indu decide to marry after the children grow up and are well settled.
Shekhar Dayal (Amitabh Bachhan) has moved into a new neighborhood, and is unhappy with the new surroundings. He resents the noise children make while playing, as he prefers quiet and solitude. His reclusion is shattered when his neighbor, Mili, comes into his life. At first he hates the intrusion, but then grows fond, and ultimately falls in love with her. Burma-based widow, Parvati, along with two sons, Prem and Rajesh, re-locates to Bombay to live with her late husband's friend and widower, Sewakram, and his two daughters, Shanti and Durga. He returns some cash and jewelery to her that was entrusted to him, and she re-locates to live in a big bungalow. Shortly thereafter, Prem and Rajesh get married to Shanti and Durga respectively. The entire family live harmoniously until Parvati is told by Mrs. Pereira that Prem has been physically abusing his pregnant wife. Parvati and Rajesh undertake to rein-in Prem - and it this overture that will not only shatter their idyllic lifestyle but force both brothers to take up arms against each other.
