Madhu aka Madhavan (Jayaram) is a successful playback singer. Chandramathi (Urvashi) is his illiterate, rustic, betel-chewing wife with a bad habit of spitting in wrong places, and they have four children. It can be described as incompatible matrimony but still a happy one. Madhu loves his wife even though they are out of sync because she has brought him luck. Here enters Lekha (Mamta Mohandas), a sophisticated urban model-cum-singer, who finds a place in the hearts of all the family members. Chandramathi thinks Lekha will be the perfect wife for her husband and a good mother for her children.

The father starts his endless wait for his son. He daily waits at the bus stop till the last bus from the town also returns. Raghava Chakyar comes to know from newspapers that Raghu was taken into custody by the Police for political reasons. He reaches the capital and meets the higher Police officials. But they pretended helpless as there is no proof that Raghu was taken into custody. Raghu's sister comes to understand that he probably would have died in police custody after being tortured, but cannot bear to tell this to her father. The old man's grip on reality slowly slips and he starts dreaming that his son is with him
Sreensan is a goldsmith who is in love with Urvashi. Her father doesn't approve, so Sreenivasan tells her that he will call her out. Urvashi convinces him to make her a 10 Pavan gold wedding necklace and that will change her family's mind about him. Sreenivasan uses all of his money to make her the necklace but it backfires when she leaves him after taking the necklace and obeys her family , to marry a gulf man. Sreenivasan is not able to get the necklace back and moves on waiting for fate to take its course which forms rest of the story.
