The Monkey's Mask is a 2000 thriller film directed by Samantha Lang. It stars Susie Porter and Kelly McGillis. Porter plays a lesbian private detective who falls in love with a suspect (McGillis) in the disappearance of a young woman. The film is based on the verse novel of the same name by Australian poet Dorothy Porter.
Young Katherine and her older friend Hester live at the isolated farm run by Hester and her father Francis. Katherine works as a maid and wants to leave that place because there's too much work. Hester, however, gets attracted to Katherine and hold her there, promising to give her less work in the future. When old Francis dies, Hester decides to sell the farm for cash. They move to small cottage on the edge of the farm and plan to go to Europe for the money they got. But tragic accident and theft of their money change their plans.
Initially following the trajectory of a car which is taking 'The Girl' (Celia Ireland), out to a social function, this short film allows the viewer to be privy to the thought processes of what it means to go "out". The girl ponders issues such as timing, kissing, a no sex policy, being interesting, making an impression, pit stops, and identifying the highlight of the evening.
