The film inside the film is titled 'Cindrella' and Sheela plays Anamika, the actress doing the female lead in 'Cindrella'. Kunchacko Boban plays her hero in the film, while Siddiq plays Sidharth, the director.
The film's plot unfolds in Alappuzha, a town in Kerala popularly known as the Venice of the East. The story revolves around Pavithran (Mammootty), who lost his parents in his childhood. He enters the police force by chance, though it is not his ambition to do so. Pavithran lands up in Alappuzha (Alappuzha incidentally is attributed to the sobriquet, Venice of the East) disguised as a merchant to investigate the murder of a union leader named Ajayan (Biju Menon). Another character is Ammu (Kavya Madhavan), who is the leader of the union of coir workers and is in love with Pavithran.

The movie tells the story of a village called Chembattunadu in Chamarajanagar District on the borders of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which is popular as Chattambinadu for the presence of several goons and hooligans. According to Vadival Vasu (Janardanan), it was the severe animosity between Mallanchira and Kattappilly families that has caused the arrival of several goons to the land, including him, which made Chattambinadu notorious. The film begins with Mallanchira Chandramohan's(Manoj K. Jayan) plan to sell off his mansion, to pay up his heavy debts.

Kamli was actually inspired by a K.N.T. Sastry's award winning documentary harvesting babies. K.N.T. Sastry wanted to make a feature film based on the documentary about the plight of tribal women selling their babies for a pittance. He actually contacted and wanted to make film with Soundarya as the main female lead of Kamli, but she died in a helicopter crash, and finally made the film with Nandita Das.
Thommanum Makkalum movie revolves around Thomman is a thief who has raised two orphaned kids, Shivan (Mammotty) and Sathyan (Lal). The story begins when they decide to mend their ways and lead a hardworking life. They migrate to a village and get involved in the lives of the local people.The story moves on as they take on the feudal head of the village. There are the expected twists and turns and predictable misunderstandings between the lead actors before the climax.
