The film is based on the story of Anatoly Kurchatkin "House of Women". A tragicomedy about four women of three generations who lives in a tiny Moscow apartment: a sick grandmother, constantly requiring attention; a mother, very peculiar woman, who still hoping to somehow arrange her personal life; and two daughters, each of whom has a lot of problems.

USSR, 1980s. Svetlana Vasilievna is a young, energetic woman, often changing jobs, accustomed to achieving the goals that she set for herself in life. She always has a clear and detailed plan of action. Everywhere and in everything she follows her calculations, not giving vent to her feelings. Her next desire is to marry a “creative, intelligent” person. Good luck finds her on a simple fishing trip, where her best friend Mila invites her. On the bank of the river Sveta is introduced to Vladimir, a high-ranking official, but at the same time possessing excessive modesty and laconicism. A widowed man a few years ago, he is looking for a sincere and warm relationship, but, without suspecting it, he finds a marriage of convenience in the person of Sveta.

Doctor Nechayev lives by the concerns of his patients. This is a man of remarkable mental qualities and a highly qualified specialist in cardiology, but he is completely unadapted to life in everyday life and imperceptibly lost himself, did not do much of what he dreamed of and did not understand the selfless love of a young student Alya. The doctor gradually puts an end to his hopes and dreams – they fade into the background, supplanted by work in the hospital.

Tarakanov, managing the estate of Prince Tikhvinsky, with the help of a former court fencing teacher Marquess and a street kid Keshka, is stealing a collection of paintings and sculptures from the abandoned estate owners. Hoping to transport her abroad, criminals wander with a circus troupe, and in their wake goes a tireless criminal investigator — Makar Ovchinnikov.
