Viswanath (Rajnikanth), a famous lawyer, stays with his widowed mother (Vijayakumari) and physically handicapped sister (Uma). Hero is the story of a criminal transforming and evolving as a good person under the influence of love. Jackie is a baddie with a heart of gold though, who has to settle scores with the area's 'Thakur' and his police officer son Sanjeev Kumar. Vandana and Arun fall in love the instant they meet. On a trip to a Shiv temple, they get married in an impromptu ceremony in front of God.
