In 1919, in a small town under the crushing heat of summer, a war hero is held prisoner in an abandoned barracks. Outside, his mangy dog barks night and day. Not far off in the countryside, an extraordinarily intelligent young woman works the land, waiting and hoping. Germany in the not-too-distant future: The borders are closed, refugees are collected in camps and turned away or accepted. The mood is charged, a police detachment is responsible for keeping the crowd in check. Volt is one of the cops. He accidentally kills a French refugee. The violence spirals out of control. Volt starts up a relationship with the sister of the man he killed and winds up between the fronts.
Within the DGSE (General Directorate for External Security), a department called the Office Of Legends (BDL) forms and remote pilot the most important agents of the French intelligence services: Clandestine. Immersion in hostile country, their mission is to identify individuals who may be recruited as sources of information. Operating "under caption", that is to say in a fabricated identity from scratch, they live for many years in a permanent duplicity. Our hero just returned from a clandestine mission six years in Damascus. But contrary to what is required by safety rules, he does not abandon his legend and the identity under which he lived in Syria, thus putting in danger the whole system.
Posted to Afghanistan for six months, legionaries Markov and Hamilton are ambushed during an mission not authorized by their superiors. Markov saves Hamilton, seriously wounded by rebel gunfire, but leaves the Legion without honors. Back in Paris, Hamilton, convalescent, wishes to remain Legionary, while Markov, now civil and undocumented, is trying to cope with his son Khadji. Hamilton lends his identity to his Chechen friend, so he could work legally. But one day, Markov disappears, leaving Hamilton Khadji disoriented and alone in the world.
