When the series moved from its post-Cheers slot on Thursdays to a post-Night Court slot on Wednesdays in 1990, series regular Jere Burns appeared in a network promo side-by-side with John Larroquette of Night Court. Reruns were syndicated to various local stations shortly after Dear John ended its run in 1992, which continued until 2004. The series also aired on E! for a brief period in the late-1990s. The show has not been seen in the United States since it left syndication.

Based on Arthur Hailey's 1965 novel of the same name, the series was produced by Aaron Spelling and set in the elegant and fictitious St. Gregory Hotel in San Francisco. Establishing shots of the hotel were filmed in front of The Fairmont San Francisco atop the Nob Hill neighborhood. Episodes followed the activities of passing guests, as well as the personal and professional lives of the hotel staff.
