An African refugee, whose identity is unknown, is being interrogated in prison. He refuses to speak and eat, seems traumatized. When the prison guard, who is looking after the prisoner, finds a hidden photograph, he realizes there is something out of the ordinary about this refugee. Inside the dreary prison cell there is a friendly relationship developing between the two of them. The prison guard is the only one who learns about the refugees past and motives. What connects the two of them is the shared fate of having lost a loved one. The guard decides to help the refugee, even if it means risking his own job. But time is getting short and the deportation machinery is already in full play.

A wide-ranging, energetic period piece tracing the rise of the Protestant Henry of Navarre as he goes from battlefield warrior to France's beloved King Henri IV. Director Jo Baier's epic is a classically entertaining adventure, albeit one with more than a little bloodshed and frequent bawdy sexual interludes. In late 16th-century France, Catholics and Protestant Huguenots were at war. Seemingly seeking peace, the French dowager queen, Catherine de Medici summons Henry to her court to have him marry her daughter, uniting the two warring factions. However, the Catholics slaughter the Protestant wedding guests in what became known as the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre and Henry-now married-must use all his guile to both stay alive and maneuver for the throne. The fact that the terseness is sometimes applied a little thick, weight to a minimum.

A dinghy drifts ashore on some forsaken beach. Its passenger is a Sri Lankan boy. Ben, a former Stasi-prisoner, saves and decides to hide him. But nothing escapes the small island community for long and soon the local policeman becomes suspicious. He and Ben used to be on opposite sides of the fence and now, as the fate of a refugee from far away unfolds, their own past catches up with them.
