The story is set in Tokyo, after bubbles that broke the laws of gravity rained down upon the world. His life is saved by Uta, a girl with mysterious powers who appears suddenly. The pair then hear a unique sound audible only to them. Why did Uta appear before Hibiki? Their encounter leads to a revelation that will change the world.

Half a year after the events of the series "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress", the team attempt to take back Unato castle. Originally released in Japan as three short films in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Then released as one film for the Japanese home market. Internationally, Netflix released a three episode series under the same name. The three episodes are edited differently and contains new content.

This series was released internationally on September 13, 2019 as a "Netflix Original" consisting of three episodes.
