Approximately a month before the death of the first Croatian president and in the wake of parliamentary elections in December 1999, a diplomat from the Croatian embassy in Paris is reported missing. He is a doctor of French literature who returned from Canada in 1991. Gawain Skok, who took part in the War for Independence and defended Vukovar, starts a search.

Growing up on an isolated island off the coast of Croatia during the reign of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, young Serafin Skoko's formative years were as repressive as they were lonely.

Matija Remetin is young man who is studying drama in Zagreb just before the outbreak of WW2. He rents the room at Marija Slajner, widow who's three previous tennants had commited suicide. Remetin begins to notice beautiful and mysterious girl on the other side of street and begins calling her Nausikaja.

Professor Gerasim and assistant Tugomir are in a ski-resort where opportunity for cheating and love is around every corner.

After the breaking of mass movements in 1971., the student Ilija Baric must leave the country because of his political beliefs, and his father Luka lost a job and goes to work to Germany. After Titos death in 1980. there is a new political motion, but repression is still strong. That feels even decennial John, the brother of Ilija, who is in love with Marina, the daughter of the Head of the police and Communist Andrew.

Tugomir, a student, wants to write a dissertation on Love, but fails to complete it before being obligatory drafted in the army. There, he succumbs to paranoia that his girlfriend is cheating on him. He decides to cheat on her too.

A monotonous life of a timid clerk from Zagreb takes an unexpected turn when an easygoing slacker from Bosnia deliberately moves into his apartment.

It is 1945 in Zagreb, and everyone is settling into the new regime following the disturbances of the war. Matilda is a wealthy widow of a war hero and has an apartment so spacious that she is required to take a boarder. Fortunately for her, the handsome young Lt. Horvat, the communist housing officer, has taken a fancy to her and has assigned his fiancee to be Matilda's new roommate. Where Matilda is soft and rounded, Lilijana is hard, skinny, and given to revolutionary pronouncements rather than tender endearments. The lieutenant loves them both, though he naturally finds Matilda more attractive. His situation is simplified when Lilijana, though pregnant, is transferred to another post. However, his commander is horrified that he has a lover in addition to his fiancee and demands that he choose whether to continue his career or continue his affair.

Lika, Austro-Hungarian Empire, the year is 1918, the last year of WWI. In a wasteland rocky area, among ravines there is a small gendarmery police station with several gendarmes headed by sergeant Cokula. The area is controlled by a group of outlaws led by Todor nicknamed "The Terrible". Sergeant Cokula and Todor did not bother each other, until bandits robbed the emperor's inspector.
