Yngwie Malmsteen

Swedish hard rock took its first big step abroad in the early 80s, when a young Yngwie Malmsteen sent a demo cassette across the Atlantic and became a guitar god overnight. Now Swedish hard rock bands perform all over the world on the biggest stages. This is the story of how Swedish hard rock became an export success.

Alcatrazz featuring the star vocalist Graham Bonnet (ex-Rainbow and The Michael Schenker Group) and the young guitar genius Yngwie J. Malmsteen toured Japan in early 1984, and the band's performance at the prestigious Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo on 28th January was released in Japan as a home video.

Inspired by the flamboyance of Hendrix, the digitally dextrous Swede started out playing in bands, but it wasn't long before he was putting his name (and what a name!) to line-ups skilled enough to support a six-string style that leans as much towards the world of classical music as that of rock. In the course of an ongoing career that encompasses ground-breaking music, global gigging, award winning albums, and as many front covers & critical backslaps as one lifetime can sensibly handle, Malmsteen has virtually reinvented the guitar as an instrument to be seen with. This DVD set includes 4 promo videos ("Bedroom Eyes," "Heaven Tonight," "Save Our Love," and "You Don't Remember"), plus an interview with Barry Barnes conducted in 2006 at Malmsteen's studio in Miami, FL.

Recorded in July 2001, this meeting of musical minds saw virtuoso guitarist Yngwie Malmsteem team up with The New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra for an incredible concert experience. Adding layers of pure rock power over the symphonic delights created by the Orchestra, Malmsteem proves his musical skills and wows the crowd in the process. Tracks include "Icarus Dream Fanfare," "Prelude To April," "Sarabande," and many others.

5.8/10

An extended live set that concluded Malmsteen's reign as one of the premier guitar heroes of the '80s, this set is comprised of many of his "hits" along with his two legendary guitar performances ("Black Star" and "Far Beyond the Sun"). There is also a self-indulgent, cliché-infected guitar solo that must have excited every 13 year old in the building. Malmsteen's playing on this set is decent, but time has not been good to this recording. It was recorded during the heyday of hair metal and the genre's influences can be heard throughout this session. The weak pop songs that plagued Malmsteen's releases after Rising Force mar too much of this session to recommend it to anyone who is not exclusively infatuated with guitar pyrotechnics or '80s metal.
