The action takes place in Lwów (L'viv) on the eve of World War II. A former White Army officer (Vladimir Mashkov) after the defeat of the Whites in the civil war in Russia emigrated to Poland (Lwów was a Polish city at that time). The chief dream of his was to buy Alaska from the USA and to return it back to Russia.
Valentin and Valentina love each other and want to marry. But their mothers are strongly against this marriage. So strong is their hate that they can use any possible means.
Set in the Soviet Union in the 70's. The plot is based on real industrial conflicts in the life of the country's largest metallurgical plant, where there are many acute problems. Fearing she may soon perish, the woman hopes for one night of romance before what could be a horrible demise.
