Several pupils from Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg are on their way to compete in a singing competition; but the majority of the school, including the principal, is not supportive. In this school, sport far outweighs culture. However, this does not stop the singers from the group to follow their passion. The principal wants to sabotage the group’s tour and sends one of the school’s teachers to distract the music teacher. They eventually arrive at a camp where they are treated as if they were in the army. This is all the principal’s doing.

Due to her mother’s drinking, Lien has to take on the role of mother for both her mom and her younger brother Braam.

It touches on social issues like suicide, drug addiction and homophobia in a tender and humerous way. The story follows Anna Meyer, a schoolgirl who wins the role of Juliet in her school's production of Romeo and Juliet. She struggles to come to terms with the deeper, darker side of her personality; mostly because she still needs to exercise the demons from a tragedy in her own life.

The story begins when Leendra van Hellberg (Deirdre Wolhuter) is released from prison after spending seven years incarcerated having being found guilty of murdering her lover. She returns home to her family in the small West Coast village of Soutmanspan, where her parents once owned a quarry before being killed in an explosion. Leendra believes the explosion was not an accident and is determined to find out who killed her parents. She believes that Gilbert Redelinghuys (André Odendaal), whose filthy rich father owns many properties in the town, had something to do with the murders. The Redelinghuys's also own a piece of land called Vlaktevlei which they used to lease to the municipality. That lease has now expired and the family wants the Coloured community living there to move out to make way for the development of a holiday resort.
