Philip (Mammootty) is the owner of a financing company. Raju (Rahman), Philip's younger brother is a drug addict and is put under rehab. Convinced that he's out of his habit Philip sends him off to Madras to pursue his studies. However on a subsequent visit to the city Philip realises that Raju has gone back to his old habits. Amidst this Raju steals some money and gets away in Philip's car which meets with an accident killing him. Years later Philip gets married to Cicily (Sobhana) and one day mysteriously Raju comes back to their house alive.
Chandran (Mammootty) is a truck driver and Ravi ( Mukesh), the cleaner of the truck. Chandran is very affectionate towards Ravi, for whom, Chandran is like an elder brother. Chandran spends most of his leisure time in booze and women, while Ravi is busy in saving all the money, as he has got a family. The story progresses with the change in life to both people.
Vasu and Chacko are working as drivers and low ranking workers for the Abkari contractor Sreekandan. Sreekandan is heavily involved in the smuggling of liquor from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu in order to increase the already high profits in his business. For some time the jobless youngsters try illegal brewing of hooch.

Vishwanathan (Jayaram) is a regular guy who comes to the city for a job interview. Achuthan Kutty (Mohanlal) is a police officer investigating the murder of a famous writer and film director Hairkrishnan (Mammootty). On finding a slipper and handkerchief at the crime spot, the police suspect the murderer to be a woman. From talking to Harikrishnan's estranged wife (Jalaja) they come to know that he had had several extra-marital affairs. Achuthan shares details of the investigation to his brother Anilkumar (Rahman) and Anil's girlfriend Shilpa (Karthika), a devout fan of Harikrishnan. The investigation proceeds to Parvathy (Unnimary), an old colleague of Harikrishnan's, who is now at a Hindu convent. After trying to suppress facts and unconvinced by the answers she gives Achuthan arrests her. Reading the newspaper article about the arrest, Shilpa tells Achuthan that she knows Parvathy as an old time friend of her mother (Sripriya). This leads to surprising revelations that link a lot more people to the investigation.
Teenagers Kannan (Sangeeth) and Radhika (Sonia Nair) are cousins and childhood playmates. They meet again at their ancestral family house in the village during the holiday season. Kannan develops feelings for Radhika; but she is conflicted on how to act on the approaches by him.

Rajan, though successful in his job, but his family life is not so happy. His wife, Nalini, aspires for a fellowship in Harvard University, US, leaving behind her husband and kid, Babumon. When his father, Madhavan, a retired school teacher, is down with ailment, Rajan along with his family returns to his ancestral home. Rajan's elder sister, Vishalam, younger sister, Seethalakshmi & husband Padmanabhan also arrive to meet their father, as his health condition was serious. Madhavan's daughters and in-laws were busy in their own ways, as they don't wish to spend many days with their dying father. In his sickness, Madhavan expresses his wish to meet his niece, Ammukutty, Ammu arrives and took care of her dying uncle. Madhavan's children except Rajan leaves as Ammu was there to look after their father. Rajan remembers his young days of romance with Ammu.

Across a dirt road, the circus truck comes to a village. The tent goes up. Schoolboys run to the tent. Village women come and watch an acrobat roll a hoop across a tightrope. A lion leaps from the edge of one stool - across darkness - on to another stool. A gap-toothed old woman gazes at a goat on a tight rope; her eyes are wide with curiosity. For three days the circus makes small ripples in the life of this village. Municipal permits are required. At a toddy shop, a soldier befriends the circus strongman; a pump attendant sits on a rock each day watching a village girl bathe and dry her hair. The dwarf brings back to the circus a watermelon larger than his head. In the film's three days, we, the viewers, learn the geography of the village: the banyan treewith leaves like transparent film, the shining water, the light on the sand at sunset. When the circus leaves the village, it leaves us. The narrative says: The circus comes and leaves; life goes on.
